Darknet Launched

After over a year of development, Darknet has finally been released! The Gear VR is now up for sale, and you should be able to download the game right away. Until the payment system for the VR app store is ready, you can download the full version of Darknet for free.

This is by far the biggest project I’ve ever started, and although I can’t yet say that I’m finished with it, this is obviously a major milestone. The hardware launch was relatively quiet, since both Oculus and Samsung want to temper consumer expectations and test the waters before going big with mobile VR. That’s fine with me, and I’m looking forward to the long haul. I won’t be able to make any money from direct sales of Darknet for a while, but if you play the game and decide you want to support me as a developer, I’ve added a donation button to the game’s About page.

Yesterday on Reddit, a player posted their impressions of the game after playing for around 8 hours. It was a great review: “The game is beautifully designed and lends itself very well for VR - I was stunned at how immersive this little puzzle game was.” But even if it weren’t so positive, I’d appreciate it all the same. Finally, I’m getting genuine feedback from a stranger on a finished version of the game. It feels great to have the game out in the wild, and I just hope that this was the first of many such reviews. If you play the game, please post about your experiences on /r/darkcom! I’ll be incorporating that feedback into the expanded version for the Oculus Rift CV1.

There are still many launches ahead, but now I can truly say I’ve released the game. Not the beginning of the end, but perhaps the end of the beginning. Now back to work! :)
